1. (rec'd from a friend shortly after I had my son). Always make sure he's pointing south before you close a diaper. Then when you change him next time, you reduce the risk of getting a surprise shower.

2. (rec'd from Cody's pediatrician) When changing or feeding during the night. Keep it quiet (no radio, TV, talking quietly and keep it to a minimum, etc.), simple (change when needed, feed when needed, absoLUTELY cuddle, kiss, tuck in), and NO extra lights, keep as dark as possible. This lets them realize right off that bat, this is not time to play, this is time to sleep. Cody was sleeping through the night before he was a month old!!! http://www.shania-twain.org/messages/smile.gif

Come on moms and dads. Time for helpful tips!! http://www.shania-twain.org/messages/smile.gif

Hey Sheri, sound advice indeed! You should know though there's a lot of luck in how soon the baby sleeps through the night. In our observation, the bigger the baby is, the sooner he'll sleep through. Our son was born a month premature (4 lbs 10 oz) and spent his first few weeks in an incubator. When we finally got him home, he had to be fed every 2 hours around the clock. Gradually this lengthened to 3 then 4 hours. If this weren't enough, he suffered from colic for months and didn't sleep through until he was NINE MONTHS OLD!! We were luckier with our daughter (6 lbs 12 oz) but even she didn't sleep through until she was about 5 months old.

Tips for the new parents? Well, for colic we gave our son what we called Gripe Water. This is what our parents had used when we were babies back in the UK. I can tell you it does settle baby down. Only after we had finished with that stage did we learn that one of the main ingredients of Gripe Water is alcohol!!

Both our babies had the croup. Taking him or her into a bathroom full of steam works wonders. Baby settles back down with no more breathing difficulty. Not so the parents. We were nervous wrecks for the rest of the night!...LOL
