Shania Twain gives birth to baby boy
By ANDREA BAILLIE
Canadian Press
Canadian divas don't get much bigger than Celine Dion and Shania Twain.
The way the two chanteuses have dealt with the recent births of their newborn sons, however, could not be more different.
While Dion breathlessly kept the world abreast of her pregnancy from almost the moment she conceived son Rene-Charles, Twain practically disappeared after announcing she was expecting a baby last winter. She quietly gave birth to son Eja (pronounced Asia) last week in Switzerland with no media fanfare.
Some might call it class versus crass.
"(It's) definitely two totally different ways of having a birth," said Karen Bertelsen, host of the entertainment show The Loop on MuchMoreMusic.
"(Celine's) was obviously a little more dramatic. Everything with Celine Dion is huge."
News of Twain's baby only became public Monday with a small blurb on a country music Web site.
The understated announcement stood in stark contrast to Dion's well-documented path to motherhood, which began almost as soon as the rail-thin singer announced she would temporarily retire to pursue her dream of having a family.
Just two weeks after undergoing fertility treatment, Dion announced she was pregnant with a bizarre announcement in which she waxed philosophic on husband Rene Angelil's battle with cancer and gushed about her unborn baby.
"And today, the life he fought for and saved is now beating inside of me, growing inside of me," she oozed. "This is my love."
The singer later appeared in a series of photos showcasing her protruding belly and even chatted about a second set of frozen eggs that may one day become a "brother or sister" for her child.
Twain, on the other hand, has rarely been seen in public since she and husband Robert (Mutt) Lange announced her pregnancy.
Nary a photograph of Twain's famous midriff has made its way into the media, and she even took a pass earlier this summer when a tribute museum opened in her hometown of Timmins, Ont.
Graham Knight, a sociology professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, said Dion's headline-grabbing antics, which included a glitzy christening in Montreal last month that would have done Britain's Royal Family proud, may be her way of quelling rumours that have dogged her relationship with her much-older husband.
"Maybe the whole thing of having a baby is (Celine) saying 'we're a normal nuclear family,'" he said. "The baby becomes a way of legitimizing her relationship with this guy who is many years her senior."
Twain, he said, has no reason to manoeuvre her pregnancy into a public relations event.
"She doesn't have to deal with any legacy of controversy," said Knight. "So she draws the line."
In fact, Twain, one of the top female recording artists in the world, has been remarkably unscathed by scandal. Her rags-to-riches story and struggles to care for her siblings after her parents died in a car crash have earned her admiration around the world, even from those who aren't necessarily fans of her music.
She has played up her northern Ontario roots, displaying a down-home charm that has been reflected in the way she handled her pregnancy.
"(Shania's pregnancy has been handled) in a more Canadian way -- more reserved," said Bertelsen. "Celine's was a very Vegas way."

I ain't no Celine fan but I think this article was in very poor taste. I couldn't agree more with the Shania stuff but my goodness it came down very hard on Celine and made some pretty big assumptions about why she did things the way she did. Personally, give me the way Shania and Mutt did it every time but you gotta allow for everyone to decide for themselves how they want to do it for their own personal reasons. It's so nice to see something nice about Shania but the fact it was presented at Celine's cost made it much less satisfying to me. DOC

I agree DOC that the article was really tough on Celine. I like Celine, and enjoy her music. She and Shania do have different philosophies on stardom. I just so happen to like Shania's philosophy best. I think the article was tough on Celine. They could have left that out and just printed the part about Shania. It was so true to her. Celine is a sweet person too and I think she was just so glad to be pregnant and therefore her ideas were different than Shania's about the publicizing of her pregnancy.

Well I would say that they are a little harsh of Celine, but Shania has always shown class.

I agree with Doc and Stan. I saw this article before coming to the board and I felt it was very inappropriate.

I'm not a fan of Celine Dion. If any of you are Canadian, then you'd understand why! Americans don't get to see all the stuff Celine does and says. She's way to dramatic for my taste.
Shania's awesome. I relate to her much more than any celebrity. She's just so normal, she's no different than the rest of us! Fame hasn't changed her!

Shania has had no printed baby news here in NY, its like they are ignoring the story here.
Only wish that these great compliments, were not made at Celine's expense.

I also agree with DOC, furthermore a potential problem with this article is that it may trigger a negative feeling against Shania among some of Celine’s fans, from those who read it. And since practically Celine is not far from Shania’s position, her fans will be doing something similar to what we are regarding Shania. So it’s unlikely for the article to go unnoticed by them. It’s like someone has put Celine down and set Shania as an example of what Celine should be, also forcing a clear comparison. They may not like that and many of them would try to prove to themselves that Shania is no way that classy as the author described her, therefor the article would lose all its substance in their minds. Kind of similar to the Shania vs. Faith forced comparison. So, despite putting Shania somewhere high in the system of values, something which we already know, I agree with you about the poor taste of the article.

Mutt and Shania have had a ton of bad things written about them....a lot of untrue stuff..
Let's see....
Shania was a studio barbie
Mutt made Shania join a cult
Mutt had brainwashed Shania into giving up her career.
To name a few.

Doc, FV and Londo, you guys are right of course. Sorry about that. I really can't write what I'd like to say about Céline without transgressing the code of conduct I just wrote so I'll have to shut up

Let's not get carried away now. http://www.shania-twain.org/messages/smile.gif It's the same article, but a different link I presume.
Some celebrities also have different ideas of what it means to be a celebrity. Some celebrities feel that if your fans are buying your albums and supporting you, you owe them everything and every piece of information. I have nothing against anyone for that. It's hard for me to say what I would be like if I were a celebrity like Shania or Celine or even Faith! Maybe I'd hide what's most personal or maybe I'd air every single breath or move. I think it's important to put yourself in their shoes. Maybe then everyone could see what it's like to be a celebrity.
BTW, I'm a fan of both Celine and Shania.............But of course, a bigger one of Shania!

Restraint is indeed a virtue Roger-I'm glad it's one of yours. Honesty is another and if we could just get you to be honest about the fact that KK's are definately better than Tim Horton's I'd be a happy man. You'd feel better about coming out of the Tim Horton's closet as well. DOC

Well, doc, the restraint is killing me on this topic...LOL. BTW, page 3 of the Ottawa Citizen has the entire class vs. crass story complete with a huge pic of Shania.
As for KKs, I've got to try more of course but they're gonna have to be less sweet to suit my taste and I don't care who (Shania) likes 'em best.

Sorry Roger, but I have to agree with Stan. I like Celine. I liked her way before I ever was aware of Shania. Granted I don't like her near as much as Shania, but still I think she has received a bum rap. She is a very nice person. God gave her a fabulous voice and she has a good stage presence. I really like a lot of her songs. Would she ever replace Shania for me? Not a chance!!
However, she doesn't deserve such comnments.

Steve, you're making it very hard for me to hold my tongue but hold it I must because my comments would not be nice and negative comments about other performers do not belong on this board. I love Céline as a singer. I'll just leave it at that.
BTW the entire front page of today's Ottawa Sun is given over to a huge pic of Shania with the headline: Man! I Feel Like a Mother!...LOL

i think some of you are being really rude about this whole thing. i agree with those who said that this article was very distasteful and wrong. there were reasons that Celine made her pregnancy public.. and part of it was to show people that had problems having children that there are still other options!! i guess that unless you have this problem yourself you obviously can't understand where she is coming from. the reason that Celine announced her pregnancy with an article in People magazine was b/cuz she said that she didn't want her fans(who she considers extended members of her family and who she said deserved to know b/cuz they had been there for her during every step of her long career and she didn't want them hearing it from a tabloid!!). different people do things differently.. there is nothing wrong with how either she or Shania handled the situation. but i know that Celine did it partly to boost awareness about en vitro fertilization.. she had also been trying for 6 years to get pregnant and she wanted to share the happy time with her fans. i am a huge Celine fan but of course i am an even bigger Shania one. Shania and Celine are friends, were neighbors in Florida, fellow Canadians and have collaborated on a song together as well and i don't think that Shania would like these things being said about her friend. this is in bad taste that people are saying these sort of things about Celine.. there is no reason for it!!! someone said that Celine fans are going to harbor bad feelings toward Shania for this and i hope to god that that doesn't happen but if they saw some of the things that y'all are saying about Celine i wouldn't blame them for having bad feelings towards Shania fans!! someone said that Celine turns everything into a media circus.. how do you figure?? so she had a big, white wedding in Quebec and it was played on television.. that isn't her fault that they played it on tv.. i'm sure that they wanted to.. she didn't aske them to. as for her wedding where she renued her vows.. what exactly is wrong with that?? absolutely nothing.. and the reason taht they had it at Caesar's Palce was b/cuz of the fact that her husband Renee is of Egyptian(i think it is Egyptian.. it is something in the middle east if not that) and they wanted to have a ceremony that is traditional to his heritage, b/cuz their first wedding was traditional to Celine's heritage. they also wanted to renue their vows b/cuz of the fact that Renee had jsut gone thru his treatment for cancer.. i think that is comendable, not something tpo be criticized.. ok, this is turning into a book. but my point is, everyone does things differently, and Celine had reasons to do what she did, so quit putting her down for it. if Shania had made her pregnancy public, you would have thought it was great, you wouldn't be putting her down, so don't do it to Celine.. it is up to them what they do and either way, i think they both showed class!!! SHANIA AND CELINE FAN FOREVER!!!
