It's a baby boy for our Shania
Country superstar in seclusion in Switzerland
By LAURA BOBAK
Toronto Sun
Country superstar Shania Twain penned a song with that name in 1996 hoping sales from the relatively unknown single would help raise money for charities that feed hungry children.

Now God has blessed Twain with a healthy son of her own, Eja (pronounced Asia).

And what a blessed life baby Eja is bound to have. While Eja's famous rags-to-riches mom grew up on an aboriginal reserve and small cities in northern Ontario, it's unlikely there'll be be mayonnaise sandwiches on the menu for Eja, who will be growing up in a Swiss chateau.

The infant was born without publicity on Aug. 12 in Switzerland, where Twain lives with her husband Robert "Mutt" Lange, a reclusive music producer who has worked with Bryan Adams, Def Leppard and Michael Bolton.

Fans in Twain's hometown of Timmins were mostly upbeat upon learning the news yesterday.

Andre Ouellet, who owns a beauty parlour, said some people are still bitter that Twain's pregnancy prevented her from travelling to the northern Ontario city for last month's grand opening of a museum dedicated to the performer. It was hoped Twain's presence would draw badly needed tourist dollars to the city.

But Ouellet's father Don, the owner of a pizza restaurant where Twain used to eat as a teen, said he's happy for her.

"She's going to be a good mother," said Don Ouellet, adding Twain will be a natural parent since she's already had hands-on experience.

"When she was young, she was looking after her brothers and sisters," Ouellet said. Twain, at age 22, took on the care of her younger siblings when her mother died in 1987.

That, agreed Twain's Canadian biographer Barbara Hager, will be a big plus as the Grammy-winning artist takes on the challenge of motherhood.

"I'm sure it would have a profound effect on how she looks a parenting and mothering," Hager said.

And although fans like Don Ouellet said they're desperate for the diva to record some new songs, Hager said she doubts Twain -- who went into seclusion in Europe after announcing the pregnancy -- will jump back into her grinding work schedule anytime soon.

"It's a really exciting time in your life. I'd be surprised if she came back quickly," Hager said.

The price of that privacy for Twain, though, could be intense loneliness due to a lack of contact with her extended family back home in Timmins, Hager said, noting Twain is accustomed to spending a lot of time with her adoptive father's aboriginal relatives.

"She must feel a little isolated there," Hager said. "She's just a small-town Canadian girl. You may get rich but you don't lose your roots."
