It was an album that never hit #1 on the Billboard 200. It never won a Grammy, CMA or ACM award for album of the year. It got generally bad reviews from Country critics. And yet...like "the little engine that could" it just kept chugging along, beloved by no one but the people---people all over the world. 3 years and 30+ million copies later, its 11th single has reached the top 20. Truly amazing. Congratulations, Shania & Mutt. Well done. And thanks for the magic of the music.

Happy Birthday COO. http://www.shania-twain.org/messages/smile.gif http://www.shania-twain.org/messages/smile.gif Wow 3 years of pure listening pleasure, and many more to come.

Its amazing what this album has done and continues to do. I'm sure Shania & Mutt are proud of what they have accomplished.

The fact that it never won album of the year at the Grammy's, CMA's & ACM's is something I have never been able to figure out. It did win album of the year hear in Canada at the CCMA's.

Its certainly gonna be a tough act to follow. I'm sure Shania & Mutt will pull it off though. http://www.shania-twain.org/messages/biggrin.gif http://www.shania-twain.org/messages/biggrin.gif

There is no question in my mind that COO is one of the greatest CD's of all time. Of course I thought so from the moment I first bought and listened to it. I remember feeling stunned at the range of styles, at the fact most of the cuts were so "uncountry" and at the sheer quality. I thought to myself, she's trying to cross over and I feared for her but, boy, was I wrong. She has successfully crossed over now and can be anything she wants to be musically. If anyone (Wing?) has any up to date info on the latest sales figures for COO, I'd appreciate hearing it. I'm generally not interested on how any one single is doing on any particular chart but how COO is doing on the chart measuring best-selling albums of all time, that does seem to me to be really significant.

One thing about COO that stands out is how deep it is. Most albums have 4 or 5 potential singles, and the rest is filler. COO really does have 16 potential singles. No filler at all; nothing that you would call a weak link. 11 singles out, and just think of what's left...gems like "Black Eyes, Blue Tears" & "I Won't Leave You Lonely." But I think the fact that so many of the singles were "uncountry" as Roger put it, worked against it at awards time. It happened to be going against "Wide Open Spaces", truth be told, a far more "Country" album than COO. That, and the popularity of the Dixie Chicks in traditional circles, probably doomed its chances. Remember how even the DC were surprised at their Grammy win?

I COULDN'T AGREE MORE WITH BOTH OF YOU. COO is a great and in my opinion the greatest albums of all time if for no reason than the sheer number of great singles in it. Not a filler at all. I'd add alot of people accuse Shania's music of being simple. I'm learning to play acoustic guitar and of course I'm learning by playing alot of Shania's songs. My instructor who is quite accomplished initially was set back by my desire to learn from her songs because they were too simple but as time has gone by he has admitted that musically the songs are for the most part alot more complicated than they appear and the musicians who back her up are extremely talented to play it so well so often. Makes me feel good to know that. Playing her songs has been tough but I'm learning alot of neat things. Happy Birthday to COO-but I gotta feel you're still a kid yet. Like a fine wine I think you'll be more appreciated as time goes on. DOC.

In reply to Roger's question.

My interpolated data shows it should hit 18 million now. However, one uncertainty of RIAA certification is it counts sales + inventory in stores minus return. If CD stores decided it is no longer as hot selling as it used to be and want to keep less stock, it may delay the certification by up to a few months.

I noticed in my city Fremont, COO is becoming harder to find, many stores only have a few copies and only one version.

Not long ago I gave a copy of COO (country version) to a friend from Hong Kong (they only have International version - close to impossible to find country version in Hong Kong) When I went to a nearby CD store to buy a replacement for myself I found the price is 18.99 dollars + tax! End up I left the store empty handed and bought it on internet at about 5 dollars less.

With so many newer CDs selling at discount price of 13.99, COO is certainly at a big disadvantage. I don't know if this is also happening in other area.

Anyway, with Christmas buying season coming there is very good chance COO will certify 18 millions before 2001.
