LOL!! I see both the Leafs and the Sens won in double overtime last night. I think they will end up facing each other again. I really think that this time the Sens will overcome their hangup about playing against Toronto in the playoffs. They didn't win the President's Trophy for nothing you know! You are right. He does look quite a bit like Mutt (well, he has blond curly rock and roll hair) but it is not Mutt. It is Daniel Alfredsson, the captain of the Ottawa Senators.

I don't know what uniform you are talking about with the "g". The "H" on the Montreal Canadiens uniform stands for Habitants - early name for the French settlers along the shores of the St. Lawrence River. Sometimes the Canadiens are called the Habs.

Roger,
If you go to the link:

then to the section on "Show",
then to the 2nd row,
then 2nd picture;
that's the one I was wondering about.
I initially missed the big "C" around the "H." So now I know it's for the Canadiens (?French spelling), and the "H" is for Habitants. Perhaps I also misread the "g" down on the hip/thigh. It might be a "9."
Ain't it grand I can be so mixed up about hockey? You're lucky it's one of the things I know almost nothing about. So you don't have to read my long tomes about it.

I'm sorry dax. The Minnesota goalie put on a good show of being hurt but I was not so sure that penalty was deserved. That bit of theatrics is what did the Canucks in.
As for the Sens, they are generally the favourites. IMO if they can get past the Devils, their way to the Cup will be clear. I watched them when the team was new and boy, were they bad!! I went to the odd game but felt cheated. But Jacques Martin has worked a miracle. I love the European emphasis on speed and finesse and discipline. Before this year they lacked grit, which Toronto for example has always had. But with the addition of enforcers and Martin's okay to retaliate, they have toughened up. I think they are now ready to take it.
I have never seen this town (Ottawa) so unified. Car flags are everywhere, including on my car...LOL You can't stop at any major intersection without seeing at least one. I counted five at a local intersection today. Apparently tens of thousands of lawn signs are ready to come out next week.
Thanx for cheering for the Sens, dax. It may be asking too much for Leaf fans to cheer for us but man on the street interviews in Vancouver today showed other Canucks fans ready to cheer on the Sens because they are the only Canadian team left.

I agree. If any team do in the Sens, it will be the Devils. Their defensive style of play is the most likely to disarm the Sens. At the beginning of their first game, the Sens came out flying. The Devils did not know what hit them and suffered two quick goals against. But the Devils speeded up, showed great discipline and had the Sens figured out by the second period. Frankly, the Sens were lucky to win the first game. It is obvious the Devils have figured out how to neutralize the Sens and they used it to great advantage in game 2.
In future games it will all depend on who gets the first goal. If the Devils can get it, they will play very safe, dull hockey and continue to frustrate the Sens. If the Sens get the first goal, the Devils can't afford to play like that and in more wide open hockey, no team can outskate or outpass the Sens.

I have to say, I was raised a Blackhawk fan (and we can see how far they've gotten in the last few... um... decades. HA! Since I haven't gotten WGN for 17 years now, I couldn't name one player anymore. Sigh...), but as much fondness as I have for the Canada teams (and Lord knows, the Canadian hockey uniforms hold a particular fondness for me as of late), I've got to cheer for the closest thing I can get to a home team. So, knowing that I'll happily applaud the winning team whichEVER it may be - I'm cheering for the Devils.
I prefer saints to devils, at least on some days, as saints can be trying too.
As for senators, they're sort of in between. How does that old Chinese proverb go? Something about uniting heaven and earth through (hu)man. The Chinese written character for this has a horizontal stroke above representing heaven, another in the middle representing (hu)man, and one at bottom representing earth, then a vertical stroke through center of all three, connecting them, with the total character meaning 'king.'
(See attached file)
But back to the subject of hookey..., I think I'm going to root for the senators. They're closer to me geographically than the devils, I think. Also, Ontario Canada dips down between Michigan where I live, and NY/New Jersey where the devils reside. Thirdly, I have a mental image from a couple years ago watching the devils play, maybe against Detroit redwings. And the superior skating and shooting skills of Detroit were thwarted by trickery and emphasis on physical abuse by the devils. That resembles life too much for my comfort. Intelligence and competence negated or even overcome by deceit, bullying and the philosophy of might makes right. Finally, for the coup de grace, Roger keeps me better informed about the score than anyone else.

LOL! Bob, I'm sure you can find the scores in the sports section of any newspaper.
In defence of the Devils, they are nowhere near a dirty in their play as Toronto. I detest bullying of any kind and especially in the field of sports in which I still maintain old-fashioned concepts like fair play and "sportsmanship". What is sad about Toronto, is I can remember the Leafs in the 50s and 60s when they relied on talent and finesse and not on goons like Domi and Tucker. Today the Sens embody the ideals of sports as I prefer them. To get back to the Devils, they are just a superb defensive team. They have completely shut down Ottawa's speedy attacks and pinpoint passing. They check so closely they risk penalties, which they got in abundance in the first period of game 2. From their point of view a risk of penalities is better than being exposed to the full brunt of Ottawa's attack. But that does not really make them dirty players, just smart ones. As a result, the Sens have just looked awful in the last couple of games. It also does not help that Martin Brodeur is just about the smartest goalie I have ever seen.
Roger
Thanks for the clarification Roger. I don't object to legal checking, it's a known part of the game. Sounds like your team has their work cut out for them.
I remember seeing excellent play by Toronto some decades ago also, tho not quite so far back as you. We didn't even have television in my parents home until the late 50's, and it's use was greatly limited; given the abundance of chores to do on a dairy farm, milk plant, & two routes delivering bottles door-to-door.
Martin Brodeur is so good with his stick,he is like a third defence man out there.I wish the canucks had him, everyone in vancouver is blaming our goalie for the loss.

Oh no!!! The next game and the ACM awards are on at the same time. AAAARRRGGGHH! Gonna have to do some serious channel hopping.
Roger
I heard about the Senators this a.m. on the news on my way to work. A small, satisfied smile crossed my face.
I'm afraid I was blissfully unaware of the problem with ACM scheduling. I don't even know what ACM is until I go look it up. Then I probably will have the same prolem as you, but on a much smaller scale and on both counts. It's not that I'm stupid, just that I have limited capacity for attention and memory. If I don't see a coworker for a few weeks at the office, and they suddenly pop around a corner saying "Hi, bob," I sometimes get their name wrong in haste to respond, even though I know them very well. There's just too many people I know there and I'm only there a few days each month. Guess the test tubes in my old radio are burdened with too thick a layer of dust. Shore is nice to have my work week start on Monday and be done by Tuesday every week, except the 1 week each month I take off completely.

Well, I wasn't downtown but news reports said the celebrations downtown were like a series win!...LOL
You know what I think gave the Sens their biggest boost? It was the peptalk Roger Neilson gave them prior to their last game. There isn't a rough, tough hockey player or fan who does not have tears in his eyes when they think about Roger. That must be very true in Vancouver too. The Sens want to win this so badly for him.

On the lighter side, Y105, Ottawa's main country radio station, is playing a song entitled "The Devils Come Up to Ottawa" in heavy rotation. It is a remixed version of "The Devil Goes Down to Georgia". To hear it go to:

The Sens relaxed just a tad after their first goal of game 7 and you just can't do that with the Devils. Congratulations to the Devils for their never say die approach. But the Sens deserve congratulations too. They have never gone this far before.
It is unfortunate for fans that the Stanley Cup finals will be between two defensive teams. Close checking games are boring.
So that's it! (That's all!) We had fun!
(We had a ball!)
It was good while it lasted
but now we're past it...
but would we do it all again?
YOU BET!!! Next year we'll be back and next year we'll make those finals.

I voted for the Senators outfit because the colors were really nice, but I think the Toronto outfit was the coolest, because I too like black and white best. I really wanted Ottawa to win not just because I was just there and went to the Junos, but it would be great to see somebody different going for the Cup. Roger, I know how it feels. I had to grin and bear it last year when the San Francisco Giants lost the World Series to the Angels. The Angels have spent most of this season in the Cellar so far!:reddancin :JP
