Nicole Kidman to Paparazzi: Cheers!

Nicole Kidman and fiancé Keith Urban used a very Australian gift to soothe the paparazzi camped outside her Sydney home on Tuesday ahead of their expected weekend wedding – a case of cold beer.

After staking out Kidman's harbor-side Sydney house for most of the day, some 20 photographers heard her garage door start to rise and quickly armed themselves with motor-drive cameras.

But instead of a shot of the bride and groom before the wedding day, two women carrying a case of beer and water bottles met the paparazzi.

Written on the case of 24 bottles of Victoria Bitter beer was a note: "Enjoy!, Nicole and Keith."

And it seemed the gesture worked, at least temporarily, with the paparazzi thanking their host and enjoying the beer – a universal greeting of friendship in Australia.

On a previous visit Kidman clashed with a photographer, claiming he was planting a listening device near her home, and gained a court restraining order against him.

But on this trip Kidman is using all her Hollywood charms.

Earlier in the day the paparazzi sent Kidman flowers to celebrate her 39th birthday on Tuesday and sang her happy birthday via a gate intercom.

Kidman emerged smiling. Asked what she planned for her birthday, she replied: "Not much, dinner at home with mum ... boring. Thank you for the flowers and the singing."

Kidman and country music star Urban arrived in Australia on Monday saying they had returned to Australia to be married.

Local media reported Kidman and Urban were tipped to tie the knot at a Catholic church near her family home in Sydney's northern suburbs this weekend.

Kidman, who won an Academy Award for her role in the 2002 film The Hours, ended her 10-year marriage to Tom Cruise in 2001. The couple has two adopted children.

She met Urban in January 2005 at an awards dinner held by the Australian government in Los Angeles honoring the two.

Kidman was born in Hawaii and raised in Australia, while Urban was born in New Zealand but also raised in Australia.

Urban won a Grammy in 2006 for best male country vocal performance with the song "You'll Think of Me."

Details of the wedding remain under wraps, but local media said Kidman is rumored to be having a hen's night on Friday at a Sydney day spa and Urban will have his buck's night on Friday.

Guests will reportedly include fellow stars Naomi Watts, Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, director Baz Luhrmann and News Corp. Ltd. boss Rupert Murdoch and his wife Wendi Deng.

Inside Nic and Keith's secret Manly wedding

By HOLLY BYRNES

June 22, 2006

THERE'LL be a string quartet and gospel readings, but guests fearing a long sermon can relax the "beautiful and uplifting" ceremony will last just 35 minutes.

As more details of the wedding of the year leaked yesterday, it emerged Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban will marry by the seaside at Manly's Cardinal Cerruti Memorial Chapel this Sunday.

Police confirmed security plans for the wedding, while a marquee under construction on the lawns of the Catholic church estate was another hard-to-miss sign the celebrity event is just days away.

As Keith's family and Nicole's best friend Naomi Watts flew into Sydney for the celebrations, the priest who will marry the couple revealed details of the church service.

Father Paul Coleman said the service would feature music and readings chosen by Kidman's mother Janelle.

It is understood a string quartet from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will play as the bride, on the arm of her father Antony, walks down the aisle.

After the service, the wedding party and guests are expected to move on for drinks, dinner and dancing in the sandstone reception hall next door.

Fr Coleman, a Kidman family friend for more than 30 years, confirmed the church service plans with the happy couple at the bride's Darling Point home on Monday.

"It will be a very solemn moment in their lives," Fr Coleman said.

The brief counselling session was fast-tracked because of the couple's international commitments and crammed into their schedule of pre-wedding events this week.

While other couples marrying into the Catholic church are expected to complete extensive relationship courses, Fr Coleman said he was reassured of the couple's love after his visit this week.

"You've got to rely on their maturity and knowledge of each other and I'm impressed," Fr Coleman said.

In his wedding sermon, Fr Coleman plans to lecture the celebrity couple on the secrets to keeping love alive: "Make time for each other, do romantic things together and never part without kissing."

Despite the fact Kidman has been divorced and Urban is not a Catholic, Fr Coleman had a "good feeling about their chances".

"It's a good story in the age of fragile marriages and broken hearts," the priest said.

At Sydney airport, the Urban clan arrived from Maroochydore on a budget Virgin Airlines flight.

Keith's mother Marienne said: "We're very excited to be here looking forward to it."

She was accompanied by her husband Bob, who stood out in the crowd with his handle bar moustache, her son Shane, his wife Jennifer and their two children.

Hours earlier Naomi Watts arrived with boyfriend Liev Schreiber. She told reporters: "Can't say too much about the wedding."

Kidman Weds Urban in Intimate Ceremony
By MERAIAH FOLEY

AP
SYDNEY, Australia (June 25) - Nicole Kidman married country music star Keith Urban at an Australian clifftop chapel Sunday in an intimate ceremony attended by close family and a smattering of A-list stars.

The beaming Oscar-winning actress arrived at the Roman Catholic church in flowing white Balenciaga gown and veil, clutching a bouquet of white roses. Church bells pealed 90 minutes later, indicating the service was over.

The couple released a photograph of Kidman in her gown and Urban in a black suit, white vest and black necktie with a white rose on his lapel, both smiling.

"We just want to thank everyone in Australia and around the world who have sent us their warm wishes," the couple said in a brief statement released with the photo.

A beaming Kidman, accompanied by her father, Antony, arrived at the church in Manly in a cream Rolls Royce limousine after driving from her harborside mansion across the iconic Sydney Harbor Bridge -- followed all the way by media helicopters.

She held a bouquet and wore drop pearl earrings, her face partly obscured by a willowy veil -- in keeping with the traditional theme expected. She smiled and waved to well-wishers gathered outside the venue and her house.

Her blonde hair hung around her shoulders. Australian Associated Press reported the gown was designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga.

The Gothic-style St. Patrick's College building was dramatically floodlit for the dusk-to-evening ceremony, held in a small chapel on the compound. The guests then moved to a marquee erected on the grounds for the reception.

Kidman's adopted daughter with ex-husband Tom Cruise , Isabella, 13, and sister Antonia arrived in a separate limousine dressed as bridesmaids. Cruise and Kidman's adopted son, Connor, 11, also was expected to participate in the ceremony.

Urban, who was not seen arriving at the church, reportedly was attended by his brother Shane and friend Marlon Holden.

The event was in contrast to Kidman and Cruise's marriage ceremony, which was held in private according to the rites of the Church of Scientology to which Cruise belongs. The couple divorced in 2001 after 10 years of marriage.

It is Urban's first marriage.

Helicopters buzzed overhead and hundreds of people -- including a throng of paparazzi -- lined the streets outside the compound in the beachside suburb as guests arrived in black luxury sedans and minibuses.

Some onlookers climbed trees and a stone wall trying to catch a glimpse of the activities inside the compound. Police, black-suited private security guards and a high fence kept out unwanted guests.

Australian movie star Hugh Jackman was the first guest to arrive, though his black European sedan almost missed the entrance. The car stopped and reversed back to enter the venue.

Kidman's mother, Janelle, was next, stopping briefly and rolling down her car's window to smile for photographers. White minibuses and a fleet of black luxury sedans brought other guests, including media mogul Rupert Murdoch and wife Wendi Deng. Australians Russell Crowe and Naomi Watts were expected to attend.

Other guests flew in from Maroochydore, the Outback town in Queensland state where Urban's family live. The bulk of the 230 or so guests were reportedly Australian friends and family.

Kidman was born in Hawaii but raised in Australia, and Urban was born in New Zealand but raised in Queensland. She held low-key celebrations in Sydney this week marking her 39th birthday. He is 38.

Reports Sunday suggested the couple recently signed a prenuptial agreement which allegedly includes an escape clause for Kidman should Urban revert to excessive drug or alcohol abuse. Details of the alleged agreement could not be confirmed.

Urban, who won a Grammy this year for best male country vocalist, has publicly acknowledged his former cocaine addiction.

The Kidman family priest who conducted the ceremony, the Rev. Paul Coleman, said beforehand that Kidman and Urban were "totally focused on their commitment."

"It's the priority in their lives," The Sunday Telegraph newspaper quoted him as saying. "It is an uplifting occasion for the community -- to see people of this profile making this commitment in Australia."

Urban's manager, Rob Potts, said Saturday the couple wanted a "normal wedding."

Media have predicted that "Moulin Rouge" director Baz Luhrmann would have a hand in the wedding video. A quartet from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra was expected to perform, as is Jackman, who sprang to fame in the Broadway musical "The Boy from Oz" before striking success in Hollywood as Wolverine in the "X-Men" series.

Urban was expected to serenade his bride. He won a Grammy this year for best male country vocalist and was named top male vocalist for the second year in a row by the Academy of Country Music.

A Country Weekly magazine reader poll this year named him country music's sexiest man.
