She'll be keeping rhythm behind her idol

A Pasco High musician and soccer star was lucky caller No. 9, winning a chance to get close to a superstar singer.

DADE CITY - Jami Pass and Shania Twain are seemingly inseparable.

Pass, a 17-year-old senior at Pasco High, has all of her favorite singer's CDs, posters on her walls, everything you'd expect from a huge fan.

"If you're in the car and a Shania song comes on," explains her mother, Vicki, "just forget about it. The windows get shattered."

Ever since Tuesday morning, the Pass household has been abuzz with excitement about Twain's concert tonight at the St. Pete Times Forum in Tampa. Jami will be going, not just as a devoted fan, but as luck would have it, as a guest drummer, performing with Twain on stage.

"With that many people there, it's kind of scary," said Pass, who won a radio contest on 99.5 WQYK-FM's morning show and will be one of four guest performers.

Her father, John, told her Monday night that WQYK was holding a contest where one caller each morning this week would be selected to perform in concert with Twain. She set her alarm for 6 a.m. - no easy concession for a teenager in summer - and woke up with her parents, listening to the radio by the phone, fingers ready to dial and crossed that maybe, somehow, she would be caller No. 9.

She called, thrilled just to hear a ring instead of the usual busy signal. Once she got on the air and learned she'd won, she still had to pass muster as a drummer capable of playing with Twain.

"They had to make sure I had rhythm," said Pass, who calmly put down the phone and played along with a song, earning approval from the show's hosts.

She called her grandmother, then her boyfriend, and it has been all she can think about since. For Pass, it's like winning a lottery you only had dreamed might exist.

Her mother remembers a few years ago when Pass e-mailed the same morning show after a different contest, just wondering if they could ever hold a sweepstakes to let a caller drum for her favorite. To have such a contest, and to win it, is the stuff they write songs about.

"This is so ironic that it's come about the way it has," said Vicki, who gets complimentary tickets to attend the concert with John.

Pass already has made a name for herself in high school soccer, where she was a first-team all-state selection this spring after leading the county with a school-record 48 goals. She led Pasco to its first district championship and playoff win, and hopes to play the sport in college. For now, she's enjoying another hobby, one that has been part of her life since the sixth grade.

She played in the jazz band at Pasco Middle School, moving on to the drum line in Pasco High's marching band, where she started on the tri-toms and now plays the snare. Since ninth grade, she has played the drums two nights a week for the youth fellowship band at her church, First Baptist of Dade City.

Only once has the drumming on her back porch prompted a complaint from neighbors, who did have a baby trying to sleep, and she gladly stopped. Should anyone else in Twain's entourage fall ill tonight, Pass also can play the organ, trumpet and bass guitar.

Her role tonight will be a traditional drum, slung over one shoulder, for Twain's last number of the night. It's called (If You're Not in It for Love) I'm Outta Here! from Twain's 1995 breakthrough album, The Woman in Me. It's also Pass' personal favorite, the song she most often plays along with on the drums on her back porch.

She's already gotten a glimpse of celebrity this week, appearing on a local daytime news show and playing drums for a live TV audience, getting a taste of the same butterflies she'll have tonight.

Vicki Pass said she hasn't been to a concert since seeing Brooks & Dunn five or six years ago, and tonight, she'll share the same excitement her daughter has, both enjoying the concert while nervously awaiting Jami's chance to perform.

"When Jami got on the air, she was just beside herself," she said. "She knows all the songs, but her favorite to play with is I'm Outta Here. And now that's exactly what she gets to do. When she played on TV, she was a little antsy, but once she got going and started drumming, the fears just went away."

Down to one
 

Well Tampa is over and done with :(, leaving only tomorrow night in Sunrise. :)

Shania as usual put everything she had into the show. She opened with the backless bright pink top, then switched to her powder blue with white strip top, and ended the evening with a Lightnings jersey.

She did return SNJAPF to the setlist tonight, which had been missing the last two times I saw her in Richmond and the Mohegan Sun. She dropped something from the encore singing only two songs, although I can't at the moment recall what was missing. As always the closer was Rock this Country. Otherwise I think that the setlist was pretty much the same as has been reported for the last few concerts.

I have to be honest though, I didn't really pay all that much attention to the details tonight, nor did I bother with my camera. I really just hung out and let the music wash over me, so as to relish the moment.

One funny incident that I do recall happened when the winner of the raffle headed up on to the stage. It was family of 3; however a little girl about 8 or 9 followed the family right up on stage. It wasn't until Shania started asking questions that she realized that the girl didn't belong to the family.

Being her ever gracious self, Shania talked with the family and took the group picture. Then she talked with the little girl, who actually sang one of Shania's songs and did a pretty good job too. Sorry I don't recall what she sang though. Hopefully someone else will remember.

Finally, I happed to spot Hardy before Emerson came on, out in the arena. So I went up and thanked him and the rest of the group for all of their hard work and efforts during the tour. He asked how many shows I had been to, and then told me that things were getting kinda bitter-sweet with the tour winding down.

Although he did mention that the boss is anxious to get off the bus and back to a more normal life for a while.

Although she loves the tour scene Shania probably will be very happy to get back home for a bit after being plagued with sickness for most of this tour.

She is probably getting itchy feet too and wants to ge getting out some new stuff :D or maybe thats just my wishful thinking :p

A charismatic and energetic Shania Twain trots on stage and mingles with her fans. And in between, she sings a few tunes.

TAMPA - It's really a moot point these days to argue if Shania Twain's a country or pop star. To 21,004 loyal fans at the St. Pete Times Forum on Friday, Twain was a star, with all the hits and radiance to keep those fans screaming for 90 minutes, even when the show's pacing was uneven. Twain's charisma lured another star to her concert Friday: Hollywood actor John Travolta.

The most popular country artist of the 1990s (along with Garth Brooks), Twain bounced onto the stage set in the center of the arena, dressed in a red sleeveless top and black spandex pants. Her first song? The buoyant female-proud Man! I Feel Like a Woman! That was followed by Up!, the title track of her 2002 album. Perhaps to punctuate her emphatic tunes (notice all those exclamation points?), Twain's stage show was loaded with pyrotechnics. Loaded!

During the fiddly diddly Honey, I'm Home Twain trotted across the stage with an inflatable version of the Stanley Cup, an homage to the Tampa Bay Lightning. This was a nice gesture considering Twain is from Canada. (The Lightning beat the Calgary Flames to win the Stanley Cup).

Trotting around with a phony Stanley Cup is one thing, but calling out raffle tickets for charity is odd, don't you think, for a star to do during a concert? Yet Twain did just that. She also posed for pictures with fans. Signed autographs. Invited children onstage to gab. During one excruciating segment, the audience got to talk to each member of Twain's eight-piece band.

We got the message: Twain cares about fan interaction. But, criminy all this commotion between songs jarred the show's pacing. Raise your hand if you wouldn't have been shocked if Twain had started a slide show presentation next. Or maybe opted to play Twister with fans.

When Twain and the band did play, they sounded good, juicing up Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? with banging drums and fiddle. The band went the medley route for a dynamic one-two-three blast of older tunes When You Win My Love, Come On Over and I'm Holding On to Love. They reworked the megahit That Don't Impress Me Much into a funky dance jam with snaky bass. I'm Gonna Getcha Good! was riveting with monster electric guitar and dizzying synths. Twain shared vocal duties with guest kids on the ballad You're Still the One.

Opening act Emerson Drive, a twangy country band from Alberta, Canada, had no trouble working up the crowd with peppy originals. The sextet performed a ferocious fiddle-steeped rendition of the Charlie Daniels Band classic The Devil Went Down to Georgia, which morphed into Led Zeppelin's Kashmir.

The concert was the best I've/we've seen. Her voice was awesome, she was so energetic, she was in great spirits and she is gona miss US! LOL The band was very much in the mood to have a great time and did their awesome best! Emerson Drive (who we met last PM-more to follow) gets better every week! They are more than ready to fly on their own and from what I saw in the individuals last PM they have what it takes!. Took well over 500 pics-even a few good ones! Heading to Sunrise this AM to send this whole thing out with class I hope. Oh, she did take a copy of Ellie's song-as to whether she'll ever read it-who knows??? Later DOC

I've come to the conclusion that these (i use the term loosely) 'reviewers' are just down right jealous!!!

They didn't get to go up on stage with Shania or grab a high five, so they have to critisise how she gives back to the thousands of fans - many who have travelled across the pond to see her - and yes, i am sure given the chance she would love to sit and chat with everyone there, but thats because she is not like all the other "artists" out there, she actualy cares about her fan base and knows that it is because of them that she is up there doing what she loves best :)

I was reading one of the reviews over at the fanclub and they mentioned that Shania said during this concert that this will be her last tour for a long long time! So who knows when we will see her on the tour scene again. Nonetheless , I'm glad she will be able to return back to normal life for a little while. I know that makes her happy.
