OTTAWA -- Country singer Shania Twain, hailed for a legendary rags-to-riches saga that has inspired millions, led a star-studded cast to receive an Order of Canada.

She was joined by the likes of speed skater Catriona Le May Doan, environmentalist Elizabeth May, chocolatier David Ganong and former Ontario lieutenant-governor Hilary Weston, along with 38 others, for the ceremony.

Gov. Gen. Michaelle Jean made the presentations, which included 18 officers and 25 members of the order recognizing people who have made a difference to their country.

The citation making Twain an officer of the order says the rags-to-riches story of superstar Shania Twain has become legendary.

It adds that the native of Timmins, Ont., was instilled with a strong sense of pride by her family, despite living in poverty.

And even as a child, it says, music played an important role in her day-to-day life.
“Today, she enjoys enormous success, yet she remains true to her roots,'' says the citation.

“Dedicated to eliminating child hunger, she supports a number of food distribution agencies like food banks and breakfast programs in schools.''

It says her journey from small-town Ontario to the pinnacle of the entertainment industry has inspired countless other emerging musicians.
