Shania Twain receives Order of Canada in Ottawa

Country-pop star Shania Twain received the Order of Canada in Ottawa today.

She accepted the honour alongside others who have made a difference to the country including former B.C. premier David Barrett and athlete Catriona Le May Doan.

As the ceremony began at Rideau Hall Friday morning, Governor General Michaelle Jean described the 43 Order of Canada nominees as "trailblazers."

"Through your efforts and extraordinary achievements, you have touched so many lives," Jean said.

"In extending the boundaries of human understanding, you have bought something entirely original to the world ... and in so doing have lived up to the spirit of the Order of Canada.

"Consider the joy and comfort you have bought to the people around you."
