Twain delights crowd in fan-friendly show

Twain delights crowd in fan-friendly show

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Keith Herrell

What's more exciting, a Shania Twain concert or a one-run Reds victory?
Down along the riverfront Saturday night, it depended on whether you were wearing a halter top or a red T-shirt. (Of course, if you wore a red halter top you had all the bases covered, so to speak.)

While the T-shirts filled Great American Ball Park for the Reds' 8-7 victory over the Astros, the halter tops packed U.S. Bank Arena to see Twain whip up on anyone who tries to pigeonhole her as pop or country.

After all, how can you not be country if you ask the musical question, "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?'' Then again, how can you not be pop with a slick show featuring fireworks, fog and synthesizers?

Twain, stopping here on her marathon "Up!'' tour with opening act Emerson Drive, set out to do one thing: put on a good show. And that she did, cramming most of her hits into a 17-song set that had her onstage for an hour and 27 minutes, with occasional time-outs for costume changes.

Performing in the round, Twain opened with "Man! I Feel Like a Woman.'' Clad in a sleeveless, zippered hoody with sequined jeans and white lace-up boots, she occupied the stage's apex while her eight-piece band patrolled the lower perimeter.

Twain was in constant motion, frequently descending to the lower level to slap hands with the fans or scrawl what couldn't have been more than an "S'' on anything that was handed up to her.

In fact, you'd be hard-pressed to find a more fan-friendly concert despite the arena's cavernous environs. In addition to the front-row interaction, Twain on three occasions brought a fan up to the stage: one for a birthday surprise, another in honor of his 26th Shania Twain concert and a third to sing along with her on "You're Still the One.''

For "The Woman In Me,'' after a short break for a costume change while members of the band introduced each other, she reappeared seated among fans in the lower level, a single spotlight pointing the way to her as she sang to acoustic guitar accompaniment.

Then there was the frequent between-songs patter, which had the added benefit of giving her singing voice a rest. At one point, she said, "It's always my greatest pleasure to hear the audience sing one of my songs.''

If that's the case, she was a happy woman Saturday night, particularly with "That Don't Impress Me Much'' and "Honey, I'm Home.''

As a concert venue, by the way, U.S. Bank Arena is a great place for a hockey game. Twain's lyrics were often lost in the loud, muddy sound system, but no one seemed terribly troubled.

It's undeniable that Twain is more popular with women than men, but sometimes it was hard to tell who was dragging whom to the concert. A few rows down from me, a man sang along and danced with great gusto to just about every song, while his female companion sat primly next to him.

Twain saved one fan-friendly flourish for last: She appeared for a two-song encore clad in a Reds jersey, finishing with "Rock This Country!,'' slapping a few more hands and running right out of the arena to a waiting tour bus.

It is always nice Chris when a Critic gets what Shania is really all about - Pleasing us fans and joining in with us in one huge party.

Minor details like muddy sound or her sore throat are lost on us as we just like to see Shania being happy and having a great time with us all.

The fact that many who post here and across at the forums message boards are worried about her voice and want her to rest a bit just proves how really fantastic you Guys are.

Bob is helping Tracy right now mount two Giant pictures of Shania sent in by Grace Billington... Now how cool is that...?

I am typing this on the PC in the back room surrounded by hundreds of priceless Shania items including the Trivia contest winner board with Lyn Kinnard's name from last year mounted on it.

Bob and I have had such a great time in Timmins. The people who live in this far northern city are just the best. It is no wonder Shania is the person we know and love. A Timmins girl at heart.

A fact that is totally lost on a lot of people. One of the best "Shania moments" that happened to me, was in Charlotte. The family behind us, never having been to a Shania concert before was curious about seeing some of our group chatting together. Before the concert, I was chatting with them, while I was waiting for FV and talkalot to show up..lol They were amazed at the fact we all came from across the States to be at the show. Also, knowing that I had seen the show before, wanted to know what it was like. Well, being their first time, I didn't tell them how it started, or how it ended. I just told them that Shania puts on a great show. I did give them a hint that they should have something for Shania to write with, and something for her to sign, since where we were sitting the chances of getting a "Shania scribble" was very high. Well, let's just say Shania backed up my bragging on how great a show she puts on. After the show, they tapped me on the shoulder and said "I can see why you all travel so far to see her"

Thank you for sharing that review Chris. The Cincy paper I bought didn't have her review in it. And this is a great review!

I guess I won't have to go into the jest of the concert since this reporter gave the highlights.

I thought I might post a couple of pics. I wanted to just enjoy the concert the last night so I let my son take the pictures and he wasn't real familiar with the digital camera so their not the best and he was sitting back a tad farther than I was, but I thought I'd post a couple anyway.

This was one he took as Shania was going by his seat after leaving the stage and was on her way out of the venue.

FANtastic review. Follows alot about my recent post in the Columbus/Cincinnati thread. It was everything the review said. I fantastic concert and honestly one of the best I've attended. Thanks for the insight on your fan interaction Chris. It might be fun to start a thread about the differnt experiences/dialogues us diehard fans have had with others before and during the concerts.

Nice one Chris. Shania seems to be having a lot more fun as this tour goes on. I loved the bit in Grand Rapids where she dragged one of the stage crew up for a dance. He was a very happy man I suspect.
