Tao Of Willie Nelson

The Tao Of Willie Nelson
Hey I wanted to let you all know I just finished reading this book while here in Aruba (actually I'm lazy so I listened to the audiobook while lounging in the sun! LOL) and it was a really great book. Willie is a really cool guy to begin with but this book is totally full of sage advise, funny jokes, musical stuff, Nashville bashing, and more. I highly recommend it-it has become required reading in my house! DOC

He is a cool guy DOC. My dad loves him. We went to see him in concert back in the late 80s-early 90's 3 times. He is too old now, but back then, he played non-stop for nearly 3 hours, no opening act. Just came on-stage and started playing!!!

Doc,

I have read this book also, Willie does have some wise advise, but some of it is really out there. I do have to admit he has some funny jokes in there. I also heard him in concert when I lived in Florida a few years ago. I have always liked his music.

If you want another good book to read or listen to in Doc's case, get Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. It does not have anything to do with music, but it does make you look at life differently.

I go with my dad to what is called "Senior Spectrum". They provide meals during the week. Since my mom died, Dad has had a hard time getting "the meals like your mother made" as he says. So, he goes there nearly every day during the week. I'm glad because he gets one square each day and at 84 that is probably all he needs since he eats his oatmeal for breakfast and has a light supper of fruit and toast.

Anyway, we met this guy at the Senior Spectrum the other day named Austin. He is probably in his 70's and he had a Nashville tee on. So we asked if he had been to Nashville recently. He said no, but he had spent a lot of time there back when country music was big. I didn't realize it isn't still. So, then he and dad talked about how they don't like today's country music, etc. Then this Austin mentioned seeing Willie Nelson recently, but I didn't catch where. But he said Willie sang very little and talked his way through most of the songs and that people kept getting up and leaving. I think that's sad. Here is a guy who has been a pioneer and a huge star of country music and now he is just a shell of his former self. Of course in his defense he is 73 I think now, so obviously he can't sing the way he did years ago, but to have the crowd get up and leave is sad. I saw this guy live 3 times with my dad some years ago. It was the best show for the money I've ever been to. Back then when you went to see Willie, he came out and played 3+ hours non-stop with no opening act. I call that getting your money's worth. When we went to see Kenny Rogers, e.g., we were lucky to get an hour out of him after his opening act.

So, I'm sorry to hear Willie being this way, but I have noticed it a lot in recent years. Age catches up with us all. If you look at Shania and the other stars at his Birthday show 3 years ago, he was letting them do most of the singing and he was just more or less talking his way through his parts, although his guitar playing is still top notch. I think it is time to throw in the towel, although like all of us, it is hard to bring yourself to do so.

I saw Willie at Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton, FL. People were sitting along the streets listening to him, of course Boca Raton is a big retirement place, so most of the people there were about Willie's age(however, I am not included in that age bracket). As far as I know the people who went to listen to him did not leave. I thought he put on a good concert. I think he has had a concert there for the last couple of years. No, he does not perform just he used to, but like Steve said he is 73. Willie has 23 concerts booked from 8/18 - 11/1. I would not say he is willing to throw in the towel just yet. I have to give the guy credit he has a lot of determination for his age, I hope he never gives up.

I think you're right Steph about not being ready to quit. I picture Willie dying on stage someplace. I have an idea that is how he'd like to go out, doing what he loves best.
