Answer Song to MIFLAW

Question Of The Week
Q: My name is Roy and I just started writing songs and only country songs. I want to write a man's version of Shania Twain's, "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" Do I need Shania and Mutt Lang's permission? (Roy, Centennial, CO)
A: Roy, best as I can explain it, here's how it works. Song titles cannot be copyrighted, so you could write another song that says, "Man! I Feel Like a Woman." But it could not contain any of the same lyrics or melody of the Twain version of a previously published song with the same title. But, if you write one called, "Girl, I Feel Like a Man," that expresses the male point of view, no problem…as long as you do not copy the same melody or any of the same lyric content of the Twain song, you do not have to ask permission.
