Tropical Depression Kenneth hitting Hawaii

Tropical Depression Kenneth (fka Hurricane Kenneth) is going to hit us starting with the Big Island this morning and working it's way right up the Island chain - hitting Oahu this evening. There are flood watches out state wide and thunderstorms hitting tonight. Kenneth is combining with another stormfront passing through to make it VERY wet.

We're supposed to get several inches of rain, and obviously, we're at sea level, too. Thankfully, we live high on a hill straight up from Pearl Harbor. We're quite safe.

Some power is out on Oahu, but not near me. The poor workers for HECO will be having to climb a mountain in the rain to look for where the damage occurred. They decided to wait until daybreak. Good idea, eh?

Last week flooding occurred on the windward side after Hurricane Jova passed north, but we're told to expect it State wide with Kenneth.

Thank GOD it's no longer a hurricane, but it sure is expected to cause a huge mess. It's been raining here in my area nonstop for 15-16 hours and the storm's not expected to hit here for several hours.

We're well stocked, though, and if we can hold onto our power, I will be musically entertained. But the storms that hit here rarely get much, if any, notice on the mainland. We're too freaking far away!

When Hurricane Iniki hit in the early 90's - on 9/11, of all things - it was either a cat 4 or a cat 4 that weakened by the time it hit, but it took out Kauai and caused severe damage on the Waianae coast of Oahu. Kauai has not yet fully recovered. We didn't get much notice, because a little storm named Andrew had just destroyed parts of Florida a short time earlier.
So, when I hear about Katrina, Ophelia, Rita, etc., I'm thinking uh-oh... and keep looking over my shoulder.

Time to swim on in to work!

Stay safe and as dry as you can, Sheri. I'm sure that everyone will keep you and your family in their thoughts.

So far, so good! We got rain throughout most of the day yesterday and most of the night. The winds didn't kick in until the middle of the night, and they were never severe, just enough to whistle and rattle the windows. The Big Island was getting 2 inches per hour in some parts. Nowhere like that here on Oahu, at least not where we are.

We got an extremely rare thunderstorm this morning. Last a good while, too. That, I thoroughly enjoyed.

I am happy to hear that you came through the storm with no problems!

Thank you, guys! It ain't over yet! We're getting hammered with heavy rains right now and I just heard thunder. I'm using my husband's computer, not mine, so I'm not taking chances. I'm outa here! (thank God I just finished running errands!)

Here's today's update - The worst is definitely past us - the islands of Kauai and Niihau may get some thunderstorms and a lot of rain today. But the Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Lanai and Oahu are for the most part cleared. We've been told we may still get rain here, but it SHOULD just be regular ol' rain.

There was actually hail in Mililani (on Oahu) yesterday. Believe that?? We were still getting lightning this morning, but no thunder with, so the heavy duty stuff must have moved on.

Glad to hear Sheri that the worst was over yesterday. By now it must be done.
