Expect a busy night on transit with World Cup soccer and Shania Twain

EDMONTON - Edmonton’s transit system is expected to be packed Thursday night as Canada faces off against New Zealand in the FIFA Women’s World Cup at Commonwealth Stadium and Shania Twain rocks Rexall Place.
The LRT will be running at its “peak service,” with trains running every five minutes, said Jennifer Laraway, a communications adviser for ETS. Meanwhile, 136 buses have been added to a shuttle schedule with buses leaving from six park-and-ride locations around the city to Commonwealth Stadium. (see: takeets.com/fifa for details on park-and-rides)
Buses will leave every five to 10 minutes, depending on the location and they will start running 90 minutes before the game.
“The biggest thing we’re trying to get across (with LRT), is that to keep the trains moving, we need people to stand clear of the doors and let people get off before you get on,” Laraway said, adding that people should give themselves extra time to reach their destination on time.
About 60 per cent of the 53,000 fans who came to the World Cup opening match last weekend took public transit, Laraway said.

“We know we did everything we could in terms of the amount of people we were moving and how fast we were moving them,” she said. “When 60 per cent of those attending are using transit, it’s going to take some time to move through a station and get to a train.”
