I wish that Shania wouldnt strain herself- maybe she should sing those which are easy for her to sing without undue strain to her vocal chords.

I think she may have that problem Keith Urban and Allison Kraus had last year.

Band Opens for Fellow Canadian Country Star

More big name entertainment came to Knoxville Saturday night. Country superstar Shania Twain, along with fellow Canadians Emerson Drive, rocked the packed Thompson Boling Arena filled with thousand of their cheering fans.

Direct from north of the border, Shania's "Up Tour," took on K-town. Opening up for the country superstar was very popular up and coming group, Alberta, Canada's Emerson Drive. The group said they too are awed in the presence of Shania.

This group of six started hitting it big just two years ago in an old, broken down tour bus, after spending years getting ready for the big time in the basement of one of the band members homes.

With their new album due out in June, the reigning 2003 ACM Top New Vocal Group said they hope to continue their success by kicking it up a notch.

Emerson Drive say it's tough, but they stay on tour on the road together in one tour bus, 11 months of the year.

Knoxville Review

Twain tastefully blends pop and country
By WAYNE BLEDSOE, bledsoe@knews.com
April 25, 2004

Let's get some things out of the way:

Yes, Shania Twain's music falls somewhere between pop-country to not-country. Yes, Twain and her producer/co-writer/husband Mutt Lange have a formula that is repeated over and over. And, yes, the formula is light, catchy and fairly disposable.

But there is one other big thing to consider: Twain's music the formulaic pop-country or not-country to beat.

Twain has charisma. She doesn't have a stunning voice, but she doesn't spend every song running through scales, either. (Many modern pop singers seem to want audiences to appreciate that they can gargle in tune.) And, as light as her music is, she delivers it with heart. She's unpretentious, warm and comfortable onstage.

Saturday night at Thompson-Boling Arena Twain and her nine-piece band gave a performance that combined big-arena pop spectacle and county fair casualness.

Emerson Drive opened the show. While the band is a capable pop-country outfit, Emerson Drive doesn't have the presence to fill up an in-the-round stage - the format used for the show. The group's standout songs were covers, with the highlight being a quote from Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" inserted into Charlie Daniels' "The Devil Went Down to Georgia."

Wearing fuchsia pants and a yellow shirt, Twain opened her set with her hits "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!," "Up!" and "Honey, I'm Home" while strolling around the circular stage.

Part of Twain's charm is that she doesn't seem affected with stardom. She spent much of each number signing autographs and accepting flowers while singing and walking the perimeter of the stage. It came off as both an old-fashioned meet-the-fans gesture but was also a little disconcerting in that Twain spent so much time with those few when 10,000 others had paid $65 or more to see her perform for them as well.

Yet, the attitude paid off in other moments. When an Oak Ridge mother and daughter were brought onstage for winning a raffle benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank and a Knoxville man was brought up to help sing "You're Still the One" the effect was sweet - although a little drawn out.

The show's "big arena" nod came in the form of sprays of fireworks, which were set off at the end of nearly every song. Only the color was unpredictable. And the concert ended with a barrage of fireworks and so much air-cannon-blown confetti that the audience on the floor seemed buried and the performers were almost invisible.

Thankfully, Twain doesn't act as if every song she sings is deep and important. "That Don't Impress Me Much," "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)" and "Any Man of Mine" are pure cotton candy - immediately likable, too much and you'll be sick, but never sick enough to swear off of it entirely.

I know Shania has impressed me with her voice...although it is a little hoarse right now....boy do we have those memories of how great it sounds:

When she sang "Blue eyes crying in the rain" with Willie nelson, and "Coat of Many Colors" with Dolly ....gave me the chills!

Shania's voice has a character all its own and the way she uses it to present a song and create a mood is her magic and my Utopia. DOC

Hi bmac, I have lots of pics, but I need to get them scanned. I'll do that soon, but I'll have to send them to someone to post on the board for me. Is that okay?

But of course! The place went nuts, too, when she came out in it.
