Montreal Concert!

The concert was great!! I loved how Shania was all over the place signing autographs and singing from the audience. You don't see that much, it goes to show that Shania is such a down to earth person. In fact she went to talk to a fan in the second row and the guy took the mic out of her hand to say how great she was and she promptly took it away as though she was embarrased by it, it was so cool, she is so modest. One thing I did notice is that the concert seemed shorter than normal, about an hour in a half, many songs seemed to have been cut out of the playlists I've been seeing on the net. Anyway, it was great, I wish I had my camera!!

Glad you had fun Vince

Did Shania speak any French on stage?
Did she wear the Montreal Canadiens hockey jersey at the end?

Yes, the second leg of the tour has a shorter set list than the first did.

Shania's sense of fun thrills packed house
Morbidly obese ticket prices don't diminish magic

If this music thing doesn't work out for Shania Twain, she has a promising career as a magician.

The country/pop queen from Timmins, Ont., started her Bell Centre show last night with a neat bit of sleight-of-hand: A suspiciously immobile silhouette of the singer appeared on a centre-stage screen seconds before the real thing darted through the crowd. But there were better tricks up her sleeve.

One was coming off like a proletarian artist - signing autographs as if her life depended on it and shaking hands with anyone in arm's length - while charging a morbidly obese sum of money for the pleasure of her company (the "cheap" tickets were going for $64.50; the upper echelon for doctors, lawyers and mob bosses reached $115).

The other was staging a show that was choreographed within an inch of its life, while retaining a sense of fun that thrilled a packed house of 22,000.

The exclamation points that punctuated the first few songs of the set - Man! I Feel Like a Woman! and Up! - said it all: Twain is a gregarious superstar, and perhaps the least introspective artist ever to play the Bell Centre. In her case, that's a compliment. From the circular stage on the middle of the floor to her game attempts at franglais, Twain was adamant about reaching out to her fans.

After remaining on an elevated hub for the opening numbers, the singer descended to the stage's lower level for Honey, I'm Home. She autographed anything that wasn't tied down and collected an infirmary ward's worth of bouquets, all without missing a note. The multitasking didn't say much for any emotional focus required by her songs, but it said a lot for her connection with the crowd.

Twain was careful to circle the stage often, but was also careful to be in the right place; one glad-handing session was abruptly halted when she dashed to her centre-stage perch in time for a blast of fire and sparks. A few more autographs and there could have been a Metallica-size pyro disaster.

Not everything worked: Up! featured a suspect vocal that sounded too doctored to be live. And Forever and For Always was a necessary change of pace, but the mid-tempo number - performed on a rotating stool in a sea of dry ice - remained the blandest love letter in Twain's book. More successful was Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under? - a down-home moment from a singer who's been more pop than country for years.

As deadline called, Twain was singing The Woman in Me (Needs the Man in You) while sitting amid her fans. Earlier, she brought a charity-raffle winner on stage for a photo, and came into the crowd to greet a pair of superfans attending their 25th show of the tour. Twain's autographs might be devalued in town this morning, but few Bell Centre crowds have gotten so close to the object of their affections.

Opener Emerson Drive was an apt fit with Twain's mainstream twang, and was energized to be playing a quasi-hometown show (four of the six members come from the Montreal area). Nonetheless, the band seemed dwarfed by the stage and had to work to gain notice, getting the biggest cheers with U2's Where the Streets Have No Name.

This "critic" needs a few emails, Shania does not lip sync in concert. During Up! they use some sort of effect on her microphone to get the "album-ish" sound. She actually sounds more like mini-mouse when they do it.

I am so happy for you Vince! Another great show...did you like the merchandise? Since you have a recording studio, how was the audio system at the arena in Montreal?
Anything funny happening during concert?

Hi Vince,

I hope you stopped by the Shania Twain Center booth to say hello to Tracy and Lindsey who were working promotions yesterday.

They gave out a case and a half of promotional material for the center and for the STC summer convention.

They even brought someone up on stage from north bay which is only a few hours from here.

Tracy had a great time (spoke to her after the show) and got to meet with JD Blair before the show.

She`s looking forward to the next show in scenic Quebec, and then will travel on to London Ontario for Monday`s show.

If you`re at the Quebec show, make sure to stop by her booth and say hello!

Ren

Thanks a lot for the reviews. As for that article, though it was informative, the things it implied really angered me- Yup, the critic definitely needs some e-mails

Tracy is Tracy Hautanen, the customer service manager of the Shania Twain Center. Lindsay is an employee of the STC.

You should find them in the lobby where the concert is being held. Check out where the merchandise is sold and you should be able to quickly find the booth. They are usually quite visible and will probably be wearing some timmins or STC clothing.

Tell Tracy that Ren says hello and that she should practice her french. )

It was fun!!! I want to go to another concert soon!!! I'll try to answer all your questions. Forgive me if I ramble. I can't remember the set completely as I was really not paying so much attention to the songs as I was trying to take in so much info, when do you get to see Shania live and in 3D!!! She basically wore the standard black pants with rhinestones (I think) with some sparkly jewelry, a pink top first then a bluish one later, for her last set she wore a Montreal Canadians jersey with jeans, very nice. The stage set-up was quite impressive as I never seen a show set up that way before, I would love to be part of her crew, I WOULD PAY! I am considering going to see her in Cincinnati on May 22nd, but my finances are somewhat low at this point as I'm going to Ft Lauderdale this weekend, too bad she wasn't playing there next week. There was a few funny moments, one good one is when she brought up a guy on stage to sing You're Still the One, she made it clear that if you come on stage you have to sing the song with her, well needless to say he got almost all the words wrong, nerves possibly, but Shania later joked that he sang ok , just all the wrong words!!! HE HE HE. She spoke French about half the night, she sounded soooooooo cute. There was one couple she "interviewed" that had attended 25 of her concerts, with 6 more coming up! WOW I wish I had that job. Anyway, it was a blast, I highly recommend it.

They must have been the couple at our shows in NC. Shania asked if they were going to any more, and they said yes. Shania said those 5 shows were on her.

I didn't get to the booth, I wish I could have spent all day looking around, there was soo much to look at, but I was with 3 other casual fans, so I couldn't "dilly dally" around too much, sorry I missed it though, I would have loved to socialize with other fans. Vince.
