WANNABE rock stars are definitely going to be envious.
Former Adelaide bloke Andy Cichon, was back in town this week enjoying time with his family in Rostrevor, catching up with old friends, oh, and playing bass guitar for Billy Joel.
Now based in New York, Andy has been part of Joel's touring band for the past nine years and has also toured with Shania Twain, but he cites a recent show in New York as the high point of his career so far.
"We just did two shows in New York and for someone who has been doing this for as long as I have, 24 years, I'm still not jaded," Andy said.
"We (with Billy Joel) played Shea Stadium. There were 63,000 people there and we had special guests like Tony Bennett, Roger Daltrey, Don Henley and John Mellencamp.
"At soundcheck we heard Paul McCartney was coming. I got to play Let It Be with my hero. Amazing."
Now married to an American university professor and with two small children, touring has become a little tougher on the heartstrings.
"It's hard," he said. "Twice a day I'm webcamming them and I read books to them over the computer."
The Morialta High School old scholar, who has also worked as a marine biology research assistant, introduced his parents to Joel before Wednesday night's concert.
"They thanked Billy for bringing their son home," he laughed.
