Big changes in Nashville???

“Within the next few years, I believe Nashville will be different,” Bowen explained. “It will be a more hip town,” he said. According to Bowen, the Nashville music scene isn’t booming right now. It enjoyed huge success throughout the 1990s with the emergence of Garth Brooks, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, the Dixie Chicks and Shania Twain. But those acts have matured, “and everyone in Nashville today is looking for the next big thing,” Bowen said. “I think something with a lot more edge will be introduced out of Nashville that will change the country music scene forever,” Bowen said.

Along the idea of adding an edge to country music, Bowen admires the success of his friend Miranda Lambert with her latest hit singles “Kerosene” and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” “Miranda is one of those female outlaws, part of the newer face of country music,” Bowen explained. “We’ve become friends in this business. It is neat to see her do so well. She is smart and a great songwriter,” Bowen said.

The hard edge this guy is talking about already went out the window. Gretchen and Big & Rich didn't last too long.

I recently sampled country radio for a couple of weeks, it is absolutely horrible. I really hope Shania leaves them in the dust and lets them die a slow and painfull death!

As someone who has chronicled numerous changes and happenings in Nashville music circles, Stark is well aware of the ongoing controversy regarding authenticity in country, but says that from her perspective it’s more an industry issue than a concern that many fans share.

“As a label, we’d be perfectly thrilled to sign either the next Randy Travis or the next Rascal Flatts,” Stark maintained. “The wonderful thing about country to me is that it can be so inclusive and contain so many different things. The wonderful thing about country radio is that fans will support both an Alan Jackson or a Shania Twain and there’s plenty of room for both of them.”

“We’re not looking to be edgy or out of the mainstream,” Stark added in assessing the type of acts that Robbins Nashville will be seeking. “We’re looking for good songs that country radio will be willing to play. But the talent pool here in Nashville is so deep that I think there’s plenty of fantastic unsigned talent out there. I’ll be definitely looking for artists to sign, getting them the right producers to work with, getting out to the clubs and hearing what’s happening out there. But there’s also the basic duties that are involved in starting any operation, so it’s really right now kind of a double job, something that’s very exciting and challenging.”

.......

“The biggest problem that I see is the cookie-cutter mentality,” Stark acknowledged. “There’s a sameness factor that’s set in to some degree, and there’s absolutely no need for that, not when we have so many wonderful performers and talented artists here in town. You’ve got to be willing to give these people a chance, team them with the right production support and get them good songs. But there’s no doubt in my mind that there are many excellent people out there looking for a chance.”

I like the style he has shown in this song he has out now. Personally when enjoying music "pre-Shania", I liked a lot of the 80's country music. I liked Alabama, Juice Newton, the Oaks, Vince Gill, Willie and Waylon, Reba, Dolly, etc. Today's stuff all sounds alike. It's like they take different singers and put them in the same scenerios. It's boring! I do like Pat Green, and this guy Bowen makes the point that today's young artists will always be different than the old days because of influences like Springsteen, Aerosmith, etc., not Ernest Tubb and Ferlin Husky. It's true, i.e., this is not your grandparents country music; and even though occasionally there will be influences like blue grass was from the George Clooney movie O Brother Where Art Thou, it will not last. Fans today for the most part do not listen to just country as we all know.

Country artists that have crossed over to the pop charts have always been bashed, but this just goes to show that people who enjoy other types of music like rock, pop, etc have a great sense of appreciation for country music as well.
