Top Of The Charts: Canadians Have The Hots For Green Day

Thursday January 13, 2005 @ 05:00 PM
By: ChartAttack.com Staff

To stand the test of time is the goal of every band and according to the chart one group is proving they’ve succeeded. No, it’s not U2, but rather, the veteran punk trio from California, Green Day.

With the majority of Canadians giving up shopping for a while, Green Day were able to capitalize on the slow sales week and return to #1. Selling 11,700 copies of their latest disc, American Idiot, Billie Joe Armstrong and crew were able to pass Shania Twain and Eminem to regain the coveted position, which they last held back in September. After going #1 twice and staying on the chart for 16 weeks, you can bet that Green Day won’t be going anywhere soon.

Eminem doesn’t seem to be budging from the top five either. Slim Shady has been staying close to the top for nine weeks now, almost making it to #1 this week, but falling short by 700 discs. With Em at #2 and Green Day at #1, could Canadians be telling their neighbours down south something? It appears that we like our musicians anti-Bush.

Well, not all our top selling stars need to have a hate on for Dubya. Shania Twain, our country music vixen, hasn’t sang any Bush hatin’ tunes and well, doesn’t really sing about anything thought provoking, so the Canadians who like their lyrics lite kept Twain high on the chart. With 8,700 discs sold, Timmins’ Twain is at #3.

We already know U2 have stood the test of time — their latest disc How To Dismantle An Atomic bomb hit #1 in November, but even with constant commercial pressure to buy their disc, the group only held on to the top spot for a week. They’re still doing well though, landing this week at #4.

Rounding out the top five is Gwen Stefani’s new disc, Love.Angel.Music.Baby, which moved up one spot this week.

Coming in at #6 is MuchDance 2005. Week after week this Much compilation has not only beaten out some big musical heavyweights, but it’s putting the other recently released Much comps to shame. The disc, featuring tracks from Beyonce, Jay-Z and Outkast, even moved up a spot this week.

Dropping two spots is Usher, who occupies the #7 slot, while Ashlee Simpson’s new disc, Autobiography, is getting a much better reception than her live performances, as it moves up to #8.

Canada’s favourite pop-punks Simple Plan should stop singing about getting dumped and write more about all the crazy success they’ve had, as they continue to chart well, this week moving up a spot to #9. Kelly Clarkson definitely doesn’t have anything to be upset about as she jumps eight places to land at #10.

There are no new debuts this week, but if you’re keeping track, Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me has been on the chart for 150 weeks, currently sitting at #78.
