Shania on "Honkey Tonk Angels" on Bio!

On The Biography Channel ~Mavericks: Honkey Tonk Angels
Premiere Date:Wednesday - November 1, 2006
Time:9/8c PM
Duration:1:00
Also airs on Thurs. 11/02 @ 1am est
and
Sat. 11/04 @ Noon

about: Mavericks: Honky Tonk Angels
The Biography Channel takes a look into the rebellious nature of country music's most successful female artists and shares the stories of roadblocks set by the music industry and new roads paved by these special artists. While most women in the business were quietly conforming to the standards set before them for recording rules, musical style, financial kickbacks and dress codes, these women refused to compromise. Featured artists include Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Shania Twain and many more. As well as featuring some of the biggest hits of our featured performers, Mavericks: Honky Tonk Angels also boasts a star-studded interview guest list that surely attests to the maverick style of these special artists. Interviews include Ray Charles, Judy Collins, Robert Duvall, Kris Kristofferson, k.d. lang, Patty Loveless, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Carl Perkins, Billy Bob Thornton, Randy Travis, Conway Twitty, Trisha Yearwood and more.

Thanks for the info! It sounds like they possibly cut and pasted some parts of the original Shania Bio into this new program...we'll see....

Thanks, I no longer have the Biography Channel. I believe this may be an older program I've seen, not sure. But since Carl Perkins is interviewed and he's been dead for a while now, it sounds like one I may be one I've seen.

That is super! I am looking forward to that show also...I have always known that Shania was a rebel at heart...But then so have we all... I would love to see that show and see how they bring out the rebel in Shania...

Show opens with Gretchen (One of the most overrated singers today. IMO.) Shania is then mentioned as a "take me as I am" woman.

A picture of Shania jumping from HIH video with the word "Maverick- a person who takes an independent stand refusing to conform" superimposed over the image. Patsy Cline is playing in the background.

Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells, Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks , Gretchen Wilson are mentioned as Honky Tonk Angels. Nat an angel

Footage of Dolly singing with Loretta Lynn.

Country Pioneers of the 50's - Patsy Cline, and Kitty Wells.
Kitty Wells sang the song "Honky Tonk Angels"

Kitty was a mom, and she had no problem getting a little sassy. "If you push me too far, you will see another side of me". The song was the first #1 song by a woman.

Lorretta and Dolly recorded the song later.

"When you look at country music, it's the woman you mostly remember".
"The female mavericks refused to be under the thumb of the men that control(ed) the industry. There was a stigma attached to female singers."

More "Hell Yeah" video clips from Gretchen

Country music has never been about empowering women

The womens movement and the rise of women in country moved together.

CMA commercial still shows Quitter video.

Loretta Lynn....
Sexuality was not readily embraced in the 60s and 70s. Lynn's song "The Pill" caused a huge problem.

Tanya Tucker....
Took heat for her marketing, and talked down her album. Her legs were showing on the cover. The song "Would you lay with me in a field of stone", caused a problem because she was so young. Her sexy album covers were a big problem.

Dolly Parton....
Dolly admits she will pretty much do anything to entertain. Being a girl was not going to stop her.

Shania Twain...
Lots of sexy pictures shown. Lots of navel gazing was going on. Her whole vibe is interesting and pulls your attention. She played the "sexy image card" as Chely Wright says. Shania is glamorous. Chely said Shania's sexiness is a liability.

If you have a hit you have a hit-Shania
Beauty on your side, then your career ends up with other elements, it doesnt change your music. If you have talent it doesn't matter.-Shania

Shania is a huge crossover artist.

Shania was not the first crossover, Patsy Cline blazed the trail. She is a primary influence to a lot of female artists.

"She had a short career, and a huge impact. I don't know if I will ever have that kind of impact"-Shania

Shania underestimates herself. She needs to blow her own horn because no one else will.

George Jones.."we didn't pay attention much to the women, until Patsy Cline."

"Patsy Cline was one of the guys".

Shania interview was from the beginning of her Up! promotion.

"We are still talking about her now 40 some odd years later. I doubt I will be in that same position when I die"-Shania Shania under estimates herself constantly.

There is a lot of Chely Wright talking in this. She mentions that Shania was singing strong female songs, and compares her to Lorretta Lynn.

If you are interested in Loretta Lynn there are a lot of interview clips of her talking.

Loretta crushed the wall in country for women. She was a maverick in singing some of the dissatisfaction of women. She wasn't politically correct.

Before Lorretta, women were opening acts, not headliners.

Dolly Parton...she mentions Shania

Dolly is a business woman.
Dolly defied the men, and the feminists at the time.

When we return......SHANIA!!!

Tanya Tucker....
Nashville wasn't ready for me...lol

Tanya Tucker belongs in the country hall of fame..she was the first country bad girl. She rocked when she wanted, partied when she wanted, and dressed like she wanted.

"She came out of the womb with attitude"

She succumbed to the industry's temptations.

The TNT cover.

She got on the cover of Rolling Stone because she was different.

"Special Guest Shania Twain...Crook and Chase" One of her first appearances. Shania's sexy image, and tongue in cheek songs.

She was image over substance according to her critics.

HIH video

She is the ultimate Cosmo Girl. "I'm okay you're okay", If you want me around you better take care of me..lol

When Shania came out, she was going to have fun with being a woman. She wasn't a militant female artist.

She refused to turn her back on country music. She wants to be a part of it. She is 100% sincere.

Tanya says we need to have music be music, stop putting artists in boxes.

Shania clips from 1996 homecoming.

Shania says she likes hearing all her music mixed together all the different styles.

Shania is a strong writer, like Lorretta, and Dolly. She writes about herself and every day life.

She didn't set out to change things, she set out to do things the way she wanted. She had the spirit of Waylon Jennings in her. She didn't set out to be a rebel.
