Shania gets Elton to come on over

After the Rolling Stones in Lausanne last month, the second wave of geriatric rock is about to crash on Lake Geneva’s shores. Elton John, the 60-year-old British knight, is set to tinkle the ivories in Vevey’s marketplace on Saturday night.

His only concert in Switzerland is expected to attract 20,000 fans. The pop musician, who began his career 40 years ago, is quoted as saying that it was his friend, Canadian country singer Shania Twain, who convinced him to come to Vevey, which overlooks Lake Geneva with a mountain backdrop. “The marketplace at Vevey is one of the most beautiful and magic places of Europe,” he said.

The outdoor venue is the same place that hosts the famous wine-makers festival (Fête des Vignerons) held four or five times every 100 years, and last held in 1999. “Since I had the chance to discover it in 2003, I have expressed the desire to sing there,” John said. The singer apparently will not linger in Switzerland for long. Laetitia Gerber, of Art Contacts, the concert producer, said the star wants to return to his bed in England the same night of the show. He is expected to arrive by helicopter before taking a limousine to a dressing room 100 meters from the stage.

For last-minute planners, at least 1,000 tickets will be available on the night of the concert at the entrance. Otherwise, they are still being sold today at the Montreux-Vevey tourism office and through Fnac and TicketCorner outlets. Prices are SFr119 for regular tickets and SFr178 for admission to the “Golden Circle.”

Doors open at 5.30 p.m. while the concert starts at 8 p.m. Organizers are recommending that concertgoers take the train because they expect traffic jams in Vevey before and after the concert.

I guess we know who is going to the concert.

Interesting-I remember some time ago post here where he actually busted on Shania's music or at least the playing of it. Said something like "How many times can you play the same old stuff on the radio"??? Can't remember exactly. I know it was after her special that she had him on though.

There's no guesses that Shania and Mutt will part of the audience. Along with Dolly Parton and Stevie Wonder, Elton was one of Shania's biggest influences growing up, especially as a singer-songwriter. I believe that COO is actually one of Elton's favorite albums and he has a lot of credit for Mutt's genius (he mentioned this on the A & E Biography interview, 2004).

I remember something about that, but I thought he was referring to music in general at that time for the most part. There were many singers out like Britney, and the Backstreet Boys, etc., and they had songs being played to death on the radio and TV. So, I think where COO was so popular as well, and new singles kept being released one after another, there were those in the industry that felt COO was being over-exposed. I loved it at the time, but for those who are not all that hot for Shania, I imagine they got a little tired of hearing her. I don't remember the exact comment Elton made. Maybe someone does.

I don't remember Elton busting Shania's music. Shania's first meeting with Elton was at a radio station in Australia or something. As soon as he saw her, the first words out of his mouth were 'You're Still The One' (started singing her song) and I think she was surprised that he even knew who she was. She was still considered a relatively new artist at the time.

Yep. I remember that. I guess he was in one of his moods he seems to go through.

Elton was complaining about "You're Still The One" and the huge global success that Shania's You're Still The One is today.... remember on Oprah... Shania came back and sang at the young couples wedding.... it was their song. Much like Celine's Titanic song.... sigh.. I never tire of them and never will.
Hugs from Nova

Shania said in one of her Starlight interviews that she went to his concert and she got totally pumped, singing her heart out and he dedicated a song to her. I remember 'Yellow Brick Road' being one of her favorite tracks of his.
