Timmins business people jailed for charitable cause
Timmins Daily Press publisher, Dan Johnson was arrested and jailed Friday in the name of fundraising.

The Kidney Foundation acted as jailer for the day as Johnson, along with a number of local business people, was taken to Timmins Square and jailed until he raised enough funds to be released.

"I was caught completely off guard," Johnson said. "I was working and two volunteers for the Kidney Foundation walked in and arrested me. They put me in pinstriped pyjamas, a ball and chain, and hand cuffs and took me down to the Timmins Square."

Friends, family members, and employees raised money to put people behind bars.

"When the 'offenders' raised enough money to match the donation which put them in jail, they were be released," said Judge Kelly Gillon. "One person had to raise $130 as requested by the people who put him in jail."

After being taken to jail, Johnson was registered and had to stand in front of the judge where he received his sentence.

"At that point, I worked the telephones to raise the money to get out of jail," he said. "I was treated very well in jail, though."

It only took Johnson an hour to raise the funds to secure his release, but he remained to raise a little extra, he said.

According to Gillon, this was the first year the Kidney Foundation undertook this form of fundraising.

"It has been a great success," she said. "It really took off."

The two-day event was held both Thursday and Friday.

Johnson said he was happy to be a part of the worthwhile cause to raise money for the Kidney Foundation.

However, he did issue a warning to the people who put him in jail.

"Whoever set me up for this fall, their turn will come," he said. "I have a year to find them."

Now, when we were in Timmins, didn't they mention Shania did this a while ago? Wasn't there a picture in the STC of Shania dressed up in black and white stripes? I looked in the 2 little Timmins Press booklets I have from Timmins, one from the homecomming, the other I got when we were there, and no pictures, of it. Maybe it was in the video I have of her homecomming. Time to watch it again.

Spock! What a GREAT picture! I've never seen it before or heard anything about this story. Thank you for bringing it up!!

If she decides to do this fundraiser again, she'll have a lot of people from this fanclub willing to put up her bail.


Maybe if Corinna, Mrrex, or Will can shed some light on this Timmins fundraiser.
