Hershey

Here is my review of Shania's concert at Hersheypark stadium in Hershey, PA on May 30, 1999.

Let my begin by answering the question "Where in Pennsylvania is Hershey" for those Shania fans who are not familiar. Hershey is located approximately 8 - 10 miles east of Harrisburg, PA in the south central part of the state. I'm sure everyone is aware of the Hershey Bar and Hershey Kisses which are made in the chocolate factory located in the town. Along with that there is a huge amusement park (one of the best in the country) and a football stadium which for a concert on this night would seat almost 30,000 people. Needless to say this concert has been sold out for weeks.

The advertised starting time was 8 pm. Shane Minor went on at 7:00 and played for a half hour as the crowd was filing into the stadium. After a break and the sun was slowly beginning to set, Leahy took the stage at 8:15 and played for about 35 minutes. Wow ! This is a vary talented family who play Canadian Fiddle music on a variety instruments including the violin, guitar, keyboard, and drums. Their dancing was also something to see.

After another break, at 9:20 the stadium lights went out. And as many have already revealed we heard that unforgettable phrase "ARE YOU READY HERSHEY". The first few notes of music are played and then there is another pause and we hear "I SAID ARE YOU READY HERSHEY". At that point the stadium lights go on, the white sheets covering the band's instruments are lifted, and as the phrase goes "THE SHOW IS ON". This was my first time seeing Shania live. I've saw the concert on tape from Dallas and a lot of her performances on TV, but there is nothing like seeing her perform live. It was everything I expected and more. I highly recommend seeing here perform live if you ever have the chance.

I think her band is awesome and love watching them play because they appear to be having so much fun. Even though the tour, including breaks, has been going on for over a year (tour anniversary was Sat. May 29), Shania and the band perform with a tremendous amount of energy.
They cover every part of the stage with all of the movement including the new, but small catwalk which extends out into the first few rows of seats. Shania also interacted a great deal with her audience. She invited several small children up on stage and talked with them. Allison, one of her fiddle players, took a Polaroid picture of them together and Shania signed the picture. There were several adults who also were invited up on stage. One guy Shania picked was holding a Star Wars light at the other end of the stadium. Shania commented after picking him to come on down, "I'll go on singing, because it'll take him a half hour to get down here". She posed for pictures with everyone invited on stage and I was impressed with how she would sign autographs and give "high fives" to those close to the stage and never miss a beat while singing. Being in a football stadium, at one point she even pitted one side of the stadium against the other to see which side could make the most noise. The crowd loved it !

As for her outfits, she opened with a green top baring the midriff with black pants that had two green stripes down the side of each pant leg (same outfit she wears to open the Dallas concert on video tape). I believe she wears a type of black sneaker that appears to have an elevated sole and heel. She later changed into a velvet red top (baring the midriff) and black stretch pants. There were two very short breaks, only a few minutes (one to change outfits, the reason for the other I'm not sure). There were the usual high school choirs and band to perform back up on "God Bless the Child, and If Your Not In It For Love". I liked the added pyrotechnics she added to the show that really lights the place up during the last several songs. The whole concert was absolutely great !!

In conclusion, I agree with other concert reviewers who have stated that Shania is a nice and very genuine person. I don't see an inflated ego and believe that her childhood and upbringing, played a major part in her attitude toward people and how she treats others. I see an honest, caring person who believes in family and friends. Shania is an entertainer who is at top of the music industry right now. But, as I have saw numerous times during interviews, she doesn't forget to thank and show gratitude to those who have put her there. And that my friends, is me, you and all of the millions of fans who have bought her music and attended her concerts. I am thankful I've had the opportunity to attend her concert and look forward to seeing her again.

I have listed below the exact set list of songs used for the Hershey show. It was interesting to note the music used for "That Don't Impress Me Much" was the remixed version that is so popular on pop radio stations (I think it is #8 on the Billboard Charts) and not the version from her album Come On Over.

1. Man, I Feel Like A Woman
2. Honey, I'm Home
3. Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under
4. Love Gets Me Everytime
5. You're Still the One
6. Come On Over
7. I'm Holding On To Love (To Save My Life)
8. That Don't Impress Me Much
(Brief break, several minutes)
9. From This Moment
10. God Bless the Child
11. No One Needs To Know
12. Any Man Of Mine
(Brief break, shorter than the first)
13. You Win My Love
14. If Your Not In It For Love, I'm Outta Here
15. Any Man Of Mine (Reprise)
16. Rock This Country
