Universal Music Group Is Market Share Leader in Top Categories for 2000
UMG Is No. 1 in Market Share for Current and Overall Albums, Singles, R&B Albums and Country Albums
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Universal Music Group (UMG) became the first company to ever achieve the No. 1 position in the top five market share categories according to SoundScan as tracked by ``Billboard'' for the year 2000.

UMG was once again the leader in Total Current U.S. Album Market Share at 28% and Total U.S. Overall Market Share at 26.8%. UMG was also the market share leader in Total U.S. Singles (22.4%), R&B Albums (39%) and Country Albums (26%).

In addition to these main categories, UMG was also No. 1 in Alternative Rock, Hard Rock, Jazz, Rap, Soundtracks, Catalog and Deep Catalog, according to SoundScan.

UMG also held the No. 1 position on the ``Billboard'' Top 200 chart for a total of 21 weeks in 2000 with Eminem, Nelly, NOW 4, Limp Bizkit, LL Cool J, Ja Rule and Jay-Z. Additionally, UMG surpassed its own history-making record by achieving the largest single-week market share of current albums ever, 37.5%, for the week-ending November 5, 2000, according to SoundScan.
