"The goodness of God is with this very special man and he shares that spirit with everyone around him."----Shania Twain
When a good person dies, something good will happen -- those were the words of the late Father Les Costello. The Father Les Costello Foundation was launched in Timmins Wednesday (see
www.channel3news.ca for the video story....Wednesday and Sat./Sunday only).
Father Costello was a lifetime resident of Northern Ontario who lived a life animated by a love for God. He founded the St. Martin de Porres Society at St. Alphonsus Church, a charitable organization which provides assistance to the poor. Father Les gave tirelessly of himself to raise money for his mission. He devoted hours delivering donations of clothing and furniture to those in need at no cost. If you needed something, he gave it to you. Prior to joining the priesthood, Les was an NHL hockey player with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He helped them win the Stanley Cup in 1948.
The Father Les Foundation aims to create awareness about Father Les' legacy of kindness toward others and devotion to charity, continue his mission by establishing and maintaining a fund in his memory, develop a system of fundraising such as personal or remembrance donations, judiciously allocate funds to charitable organizations that lend support to those in need of financial, medical or other resources, and ensure transparency by annually reporting on foundation initiatives and finances.
There are a few Shania/Fr. Les connections....he married Jerry & Sharon, and Shania also bought him an organ for his church.
