Lost Highway

This evening at 9 p.m., CMT Canada will air the first hour of a four hour BBC history on country music entitled: Lost Highway.

This major four-part BBC2 series celebrates the history of country music, from its origins in the folk songs of the working classes of the South Eastern states to the multi-million dollar industry of modern Nashville.

When it was aired in the UK last February and March, the producers did not expect big ratings because country music is not popular there. As it turned out, each episode captured the network's highest daily viewership.

This series will air on the Trio network in the USA in July.

Well, this post received 27 hits but no replies. Maybe no one else is interested. I have been watching this series and find it fascinating. I have learned a lot about country music in the USA. Last night, they showed the third hour. It covered a lot of territory from the late 60s to the 90s, but mostly covered the 70s and 80s. They touched on Shania right at the end as an example of country music yet again borrowing from pop music to stay alive. This trend began in the 80s with Garth Brooks.

Next week is the final hour. From the preview it looks as if they will finally cover the women of country music so look for quite a bit more (I would think) about Shania. In a way, a program like this will tell you more about Shania than a program devoted exclusively to her because it puts Shania in context.

Maybe CMT will pick up the series, or PBS.

I believe there was a series on CMT similar to this one a couple of years back that was narrated by James Garner.....I forget the name but it sounds the same because the last hour was on women and they did a little bit about Shania then.. Chris do you remember?
